Amazon’s Lawsuits Target Third-Party Sellers Filing False Infringement Claims to Gain Competitive Advantage

Amazon’s recent legal action reinforces Brand owners rights and the legitimate use of Brand Registry.

Amazon on Thursday filed lawsuits against “bad actor” third party sellers that were submitting thousands of false infringement claims in a scheme to remove competitive product listings in order to drive more sales to them. These sellers were allegedly impersonating brands by submitting false copyright complaint cases by way of the Amazon Brand Registry. The lawsuit asserts that these sellers lacked any legitimate ownership rights to the content they were reporting on and they created fake websites with disposable domain names and fraudulent trademarks applications to perpetrate the fraud.

This legal action by Amazon supports the rights of legitimate Brand Owners who use the Amazon Brand Registry to report sellers that are violating their intellectual property and marketplace policies.

POTOO has helped identify and report on numerous such cases including malicious websites like the ones identified in the lawsuit, and we applaud Amazon’s continued commitment to this cause. Message us on LinkedIn or contact us at info@potoosolutions.com to learn more.
